Most API 570 applications that stall do so on paper, not in the exam room. The years are real, but they are the wrong kind of years, or they are older than ten.
Who is eligible to take the API 570 exam?
API ties eligibility to Annex A of the API 570 code. The rule is a combination of education and experience in in-service metallic piping systems, and the experience has to be recent: within the last 10 years, while employed by or under contract with an authorized inspection agency as API 570 defines that term.

How many years of experience does each education level need?
The table below is API’s, cut down to the minimum years.
| Education | Minimum experience |
|---|---|
| BS or higher in engineering or technology, or 3+ years of military service in a technical role | 1 year |
| 2-year degree or certificate in engineering or technology, or 2 years of military service in a technical role | 2 years |
| High school diploma or equivalent | 3 years |
| No formal education | 5 or more years |
The first row asks for one year of supervising or performing inspection activities as described in API 570. The other three rows ask for experience in design, construction, repair, operation or inspection of in-service piping systems, and one year of that total must be supervision or performance of inspection.
That last clause is where people trip. Years in piping design or operations help, but they never replace the inspection year.
What counts as piping inspection experience on a real site?
API’s words are “supervision or performance of inspection activities as described in API 570”. On a plant that means the work the code describes: thickness readings on circuits, corrosion rate and remaining life calculations, checks of injection points and dead legs, and judging repairs and alterations. A person who reviews the readings, sets the next interval and signs off on a repair is supervising. A person who walks the circuit with a UT gauge is performing.
Work that sits near piping without touching the inspection process is thinner ground. Drawing isometrics, expediting pipe or running a unit shift can all be piping experience of the longer kind, but only in the rows that allow it, and never as the one inspection year.
Contractors ask whether their years count. API’s wording covers employment by, or under contract with, an authorized inspection agency, so a contract that puts you inside one is the question to settle with your employer before you write a word on the form.
Worked example: checking your own eligibility
Take a candidate with a high school diploma who has worked 4 years at a refinery.
- Education row: the high school diploma row applies, so the minimum is 3 years.
- Recency: all 4 years fall within the last 10 years, so all 4 are in play.
- Agency: the employer must be an authorized inspection agency as API 570 defines it, or the work must be done under contract with one.
- Inspection year: of those years, at least 1 must be supervising or performing API 570 inspection activities. If only 6 months were, the application fails even though the total looks generous.
The candidate qualifies only if step 4 holds. Counting calendar years alone is the mistake.
The API 570 Complete Exam Kit cannot fix a short inspection year, but it works the exam side once you are in, with every answer explained.
How do you apply, and by when?
Application deadlines fall roughly two months before each window opens. API’s schedule lists these 570 windows ahead of you:
- January 29 to February 19, 2027, with an application deadline of November 26, 2026.
- June 4 to 25, 2027, with a deadline of April 1, 2027.
- October 8 to 29, 2027, with a deadline of August 5, 2027.
The October 2026 window is already open, and its deadline of August 7, 2026 has passed.
Fees depend on the year of the exam. The 2027 initial certification fee for API 510, 570 and 653 is $890 for API members and $1,140 for non-members. A late application fee of $200 applies to all programs, and rescheduling costs $350. A rejected application is the expensive way to learn the rules, so check your years before you pay.
The exam itself is 170 questions, 140 of them scored, in person at designated test centers: 110 closed-book questions, then 60 open-book questions. API says questions come from the publications on the effectivity sheet for your window. For February and June 2027 that sheet lists API 570 5th Edition, February 2024, and the 2023 ASME Code editions, so read it before you buy any books.
What are the common application mistakes?
They repeat. Candidates count experience older than 10 years. They count years that were not with an authorized inspection agency. They have no inspection year, or one that cannot be shown on paper. Or they miss the deadline and pay the late fee, or lose the window.
Keep a simple log while you work: dates, employer, supervisor, and what you inspected. The verification step is where a gap shows up, and it is far easier to write down a job when you finish it than to rebuild it from memory two years later. Your supervisor’s contact details matter too, because a supervisor who does not answer API’s request delays the file.
How does eligibility show up on the exam?
It rarely appears as a question. The pattern behind it does. The Body of Knowledge says questions come only from the listed references and editions, and that the open-book part tests detail an inspector is expected to find, not memorize. That is the same logic as the inspection year: API wants people who work from the code on real piping, not people who have read about it.
So the practical habit is to study with the codes you will use at work, in the editions on your window’s sheet. Candidates who prepared on an older edition from a colleague’s shelf are the ones surprised by a changed paragraph.
What happens after you pass?
API 570 certification is valid for a three-year term. To recertify you apply up to 90 days before expiry, with a 90-day grace period after. API asks for at least 20 percent of your time over the cycle spent performing or supervising in-service piping inspection, plus 24 hours of continuing professional development. An open-book webquiz of 25 questions is required every six years.
Eligibility is not a one-time gate. The inspection work that qualifies you has to continue.
What to do next
Check your own years against the table, then pull your dates and supervisors together before you open the application. When you are ready to study, the API 570 study plan works back from your window, and the certification guide covers the exam. Try the free sample questions, read the other API 570 posts, and when a window is booked, the practice tests give you the timed rehearsal.
