Airframe Stress Analysis Vol. 1: Free Kindle Promotion
Practical Airframe Stress Analysis, Volume 1 is free on Kindle for five days: metallic structure by hand calculation, 26 chapters and 85 worked examples.
In short
- The Kindle ebook of Practical Airframe Stress Analysis, Volume 1: Metallic Structure is free for five days during a free Kindle promotion; the paperback keeps its normal price.
- It is a desk handbook for sizing and substantiating metallic airframe structure by hand calculation, from the loads file to a margin a checker will accept.
- It has 26 chapters and 85 fully worked examples, each checked numerically.
Every stress engineer has sat with a loads package of several hundred cases, a finite element cut and a fitting drawing, and wondered which hand check the checker will actually ask for. For five days the Kindle edition of the handbook I wrote for that moment is free to download.
The gap it fills
University teaches the bending formula and the Euler load. A stress group then hands a new engineer real structure, a deadline and a checker, and the space between the two is mostly learned by watching colleagues. Volume 1 writes that space down. Every method sits in the workflow it belongs to: the loads, the free-body diagram, the cut through the model, the hand calculation, the margin and the report.
What you get in the 26 chapters
The book has 85 fully worked examples, each solved step by step, checked numerically and closed with the questions a reviewer would raise. It covers margins of safety and the factors of 14 CFR Part 25, including how not to stack them, and moves through material allowables, beams and thin-walled sections, columns and plastic bending.
The middle of the book is where most sizing time goes: plate buckling, crippling, effective width, stiffened panels, diagonal tension webs, curved panels and cutouts. Then come lugs and pins, fastened joints with fastener flexibility and load distribution, fittings, clips and brackets, and fatigue and damage tolerance seen from the static analyst’s desk. The last chapters cover writing a stress report that passes review, a capstone fitting taken from loads to report, and where AI assistants save time and where they fail.
All methods come from public sources such as NACA and NASA reports, US Air Force manuals and FAA material. Material values are illustrative, and on a program the company methods and allowables govern.
Who should take the free copy
Engineers in their first years on an airframe program will get the most from it, along with mechanical engineers moving into aircraft structures. Experienced analysts tend to use it as a desk reference, the book they reach for when a junior asks why a margin was computed one way and not another.
Reading it on a Kindle
Equations and worked examples read best on a tablet or a computer, and the free Kindle app runs on both. Download it once and it syncs across your devices, so you can work through a chapter on a laptop at the desk and look back at an example on your phone.
The paperback, Volume 2 and the companion
The promotion covers the Kindle ebook only; the paperback stays at its usual price and many stress engineers keep one on the desk. The composite volume, Volume 2, is in the same promotion, and so is the Python companion. There is also a free reader’s companion with a short quiz per chapter, and a longer introduction to Volume 1.
If you read it and it helps, an honest rating or review on the Amazon store where you downloaded it would mean a lot to me.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kindle ebook really free?
Yes, while the promotion runs, in every Amazon store that sells Kindle ebooks. Afterwards it returns to its paid price. The paperback is not part of the promotion.
Do I need a Kindle device to read it?
No. The free Kindle app works on phones, tablets and computers. For the equations and the worked examples a tablet or a computer screen is the most comfortable.
Which countries can download it free?
Every Amazon store that sells Kindle ebooks. The button opens your own country's store; check that the price shows 0.00 before you click Buy.
Is it mine to keep?
Yes. Once you download it, it stays in your Kindle library after the promotion, and nothing is asked in return.
